Biography of the editorial cartoonist Ludus

My name is Daniele Imperi and I’m a cartoonist. Since I was a child I’ve drawn dozens of characters and situations, but only in the twenty years I’ve decided to create cartoons and humorous comic strips.

I started collaborating as a cartoonist in 1996, when, thanks to job advertisements in the Roman newspaper “Porta Portese”, I got in touch with various publishing companies, getting interesting collaborations.

Since then, and for several years, I drew cartoons and humorous illustrations on many subjects. My cartoons have been published in magazines, children’s books, websites, greeting cards, advertising material, etc.

At comic school to improve my drawing skills

From 1998 to 2000 I attended the “Course of comics’ drawing and technique” at the Roman School of Comics, specializing in the humorous cartoons, that I prefer to draw freehand and to ink with a pen nib.

I took part in 3 comics exhibitions, doing drawings on demand for visitors.

Editorial cartoonist

From 1999 to 2008 I worked as a cartoonist with Golden Italia Editrice (a publishing house that published magazines and collectors’ material), drawing cartoons for the magazine “Il Mercatino del Collezionista” and then for “Capsule”.

From March 2003 to 2007 I was contacted by the magazine “Gente Motori”, edited by Hachette-Rusconi, and I made humorous cartoons for articles. Since 2005, some cartoons appeared in the magazine “Tutto Moto”.

My drawing tools for drawing cartoons

I’m an old-fashioned cartoonist: for the black and white cartoons I love to use the nib and Indian ink. Sometimes I use digital screentones to aply shades or texture to my cartoons.

Years ago I used Pantone markers to colour my drawing, but now I prefer the digital colouring.

Drawing style of my cartoons

As I’ve already said, I’m a humorous and grotesque drawer. My style has undergone the influences of the great cartoonists of the past: Jacovitti, Bonvi and Magnus, Schulz and Cegar, and many other old style cartoonist and comics artists.
